The Weta Cave in Miramar, Wellington is a small museum, theater, and merchandise store, but to fans of film across the world, this “Cave” is more akin to a dragon’s hoard.
The Weta Cave theaterette provides exclusive screenings of interviews with Weta co-founders including Peter Jackson and Richard Taylor. It also gives a unique first hand look at the imagination and creative process behind the creation of Weta art. The mini-musuem features many props, characters, and displays from films such as The Lord of the Rings, Tintin, The Hobbit, and King Kong. The Weta merchandise store is quite successful and sells a wide range of prop replicas, which attracts collectors from around the world.
If you happen to be in the area and you have been looking for an extra special reason to visit the Weta Cave, this should be your weekend! Tomorrow, June 8th, The Weta Cave celebrates its 5th birthday. They are planning special activities including a chainmail making workshop, store exclusives, prizes, and “unexpected” visits from special guests.
