The world premiere of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will not be in New Zealand.
As yet, the location of the premiere for the second Hobbit film has not been revealed, but it will not be in Wellington. A spokesman for Peter Jackson said the decision had been made in order to appeal to a broader global audience.
Matthew Dravitzki of Wingnut Films told TVNZ that there had never been any intention to hold all three premieres in New Zealand.
“This is not us not premiering The Hobbit in Wellington.
“With the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the first film was premiered in London, the second film was premiered in New York, and the third film was premiered in Wellington.”
“These films are for a global audience, and the premieres need to happen in other places as well.”
The premiere for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in Wellington last November earned nearly $12 million for the New Zealand economy.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is due for general release on 13 December 2013.
