From the August issue of Empire Magazine, we had a chance to find out much more about the elven trio from Mirkwood formed by Legolas (Orland Bloom), Thranduil (Lee Pace) and he brand-new character Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly). But who is this new redhead female elf? With The Lord of the Rings trilogy we were used to Arwen’s sweetness and Galadriel’s wisdom, but in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug we’ll meet a new kind of female elf: a dangerous warrior.
As Evangeline Lilly said to Empire “She is less wise and much more dangerous. […] I’m barely 300 years old! She’s got a little bit of immaturity and a lot of spontaneity.” She’s a young elf, if we consider that Legolas is more than 2000 years old. Lilly continues: ”I’ve been up in trees and scaled walls. I scale an orc at one point – she’s almost ninja-esque. She’s just slicing through [rivals] like blades of grass to get to the finish line. She has no problem killing; that is what she does. She is a killing machine.”
”This is probably the most tempting role I could be offered.” Lilly admitted. She confessed on her website that when she was a young teen, “The Hobbit was my favourite book…and the Wood Elves were my favourite characters in all of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. I fancied being a Wood Elf myself, but never dreamed in a million years I’d actually get to become one!”
It seems that Peter Jackson wanted to add a female touch to The Hobbit and Philippa Boyens confirmed it saying: ”Tauriel was a complete addition for filmic reasons. You need energy in there – there are young women watching these films. It was an easy decision to make.”
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is scheduled for release on 13 December 2013.
