Simone Mitchell, an Australian writer and producer at DailyLife.com.au, visited Wellington for the first time and suggested some things to see and to do in that city, now also called “Wellywood”, thanks to Peter Jackson’s movie sets at Miramar.
If you are a The Lord of the Rings trilogy fan, embarking on a Wellington Rover Lord of the Rings tour is a must. You’ll be able to visit many movie locations through Wellington area, above all the amazing Weta Workshop “a multi-award winning conceptual design and physical manufacturing facility servicing the world’s entertainment and creative industries.” Other steps are The Roxy Cinema, the City Gallery for the fans of contemporary art, TePapa a New Zealand’s national collection and the Wellington Night Market where “There’s lots of good, cheap food on offer, and live music to enjoy while you’re munching,” according to Simone.
Another thing to do in Wellington is…shopping! Shoezier, World, Iko Iko, Madame Fancy Pants and Minerva are true heavens for the shopping lovers.
On the northern shores of Wellington Harbour, there is Petone, New Zealand’s first organised settlement, a beautiful choice for a day trip. Along Jackson Street, the main drag, you’ll find excellent places for shopping and eating. Sweetpea, a tea house/bakery in 1950s style, UK Goodies and The Dutch Cheese Shop are just some of the places to stop by.
“If you’re doing a week in Wellington, I implore you to go and spend at least a couple of days out in the Wairarapa region. Just a scenic 45-minute train ride out of Wellington and you’re in the heart of the glorious, mountainous countryside that New Zealand is famous for.”
Many other places are waiting for you. Wellington is a beautiful city full of locals and shops and things to do and is also located a few minutes from New Zealand’s pristine nature.
