An Eagle’s View of Middle-earth

I hope you all can forgive me for missing last week’s “An Eagle’s View of Middle-earth” post. Last Saturday was Reclaiming the Blade Day, a day fully devoted to the art and love of the sword! (Afterward, this reporter needed some extra sleep!)

Some of the highlights were our Middle-earth News Director, Arwen Kester, getting to interview John Rhys-Davies and Weta Workshop! You can see the full videos by becoming a backer of Reclaiming the Blade: Sons of Fire on Kickstarter.

Tell me I’m not the only one who loves just flicking through the pattern catalogs in any craft or sewing store. If you’re like me, you’ll now have some great new dwarvish costumes to daydream about. Or maybe you are one of the talented people who can actually turn these costumes into a reality. This sneak peak of Simplicity’s new pattern was provided by Andrea Schewe Design; she even did a follow up post about working with fur that will be helpful for those of you thinking of dwarven cosplay. Dr. Peter Jäger, expert consultant to Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan, discovered a new, eight-legged critter and named it after the actor in recognition of Monaghan’s natural world enthusiasm. The spider is called Ctenus monaghani, and it seems appropriate since the genus Ctenus belongs to the so-called wandering spiders, which fits Monaghan in both human and hobbit form! (Arwen Kester)

Dallas Summer Musicals, Inc. (DSM) has announced their 2013-2014 season of shows that includes The Lord of the Rings in Concert scheduled for November 8-10, 2013. Composer Howard Shore’s music, performed by Dallas Pops Orchestra, expresses The Fellowship of the Ring as an immense symphonic work. Counted among film music’s most complete and comprehensive works, this unique performance of the music of The Lord of the Rings sets the score to the film but allows the music to bear the narrative weight, creating a wholly new and dramatic live concert experience. In addition to doing some fantastic Dwalin cosplay, this tumblr user also gives some great advice on becoming a bearded dwarven lady! (Maria)

The Huntsman pub in Harborne, which was recently taken over and given a Lord of the Rings-style refurbishment by business man Aman Rishi, caught on fire and firefighters had to close down the surrounding roads as they battled the blaze. We suspect that Saruman and Wormtongue are to blame! (Arwen Kester)

You may have read about Facebook billionaire Sean Parker’s wedding to his now wife Alexandra Lenas and that the costume designer from The Lord of the Rings was on hand to outfit all 364 attendees with personalized clothing that would be period/nerd appropriate. The question remains: which celebrity did Tolkien the most proud? (Arwen Kester)

Re-cuts of The Lord of the Rings never get old for me. Here is the song YMCA sung by characters from the films! (Lily Milos)
