The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has opened in China with thundering box office takings of $32.7 million! This makes it the top Warner Brothers film ever for opening earnings in China.
Over three days The Hobbit: DOS beat The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by a whopping 74% at the box office. Not only that, it also became the biggest Hollywood title for Imax at $4.4 million, beating Gravity at $4.3 million, reports The Wrap.
When the Chinese premiere of The Hobbit: DOS was held in Beijing recently, Peter Jackson sent a video greeting to fans in which he said he was busy with postproduction on The Hobbit 3 and couldn’t leave New Zealand, but hoped fans would enjoy the film. Well it certainly seems that they are!
As we recently reported, the foreign box office is important for The Hobbit so Warner Brothers must be delighted with how well the film is doing in China. And there’s still Japan to come!
