The Tolkienaeum by Mark T. Hooker is a new collection of essays that explore many facets of Tolkien’s work. Mr. Hooker was honored in 2012 with the Beyond Bree Award, an award given by the publication Beyond Bree in recognition of outstanding contributions to the study of J. R. R. Tolkien. The Tolkienaeum is the fourth volume on Tolkien’s work authored by Mr. Hooker.
The Tolkienaeum contains both new essays and previously published works that have been revised and expanded for the current publication. The essays collected in The Tolkienaeum cover a wide range of topics, including Tolkien’s probable literary sources, his philological jokes, and his serious linguistics. A linguist by training, Mr. Hooker shares Tolkien’s regard for word histories and engages in the same sort of linguistic invention that Tolkien enjoyed. The essays are written with the non-linguist in mind, providing a non-technical view of how Tolkien’s synthetic languages fit into linguistics as a whole. The book includes a glossary of linguistic terms to help the reader conquer the unavoidable jargon of the field.
