There are good news for the Middle-earth fans all around the world, because Weta Cave expands itself in a new area that is twice the size of the original cave!

The museum arm of special effects production house Weta Workshop in Miramar, Wellington (NZ), could originally host 20 people at a time, but has always struggled to cope with big groups of visitors, from school children to cruise ship passengers. Fortunately they decided to expand the Cave in a new double sized area (400 square metres), that will be called the Weta Cave Experience and will be able to host groups of 55 people. The new cave has been built and set up in only four weeks at a cost of between $100,000 and $200,000.

Weta Workshop general manager David Wilks stated: “We realised we had to do something to improve the quality of the experience for the cruise passengers and improve the capacity issues and congestion issues [at the original cave]. […] The key thing for us is not wanting to push volume through, it’s about making sure we can focus on providing a good experience.”

The smaller Weta Cave, which has been handling between 50,000 and 60,000 visitors a year, will remain open for smaller groups and individuals.
