UPDATE:
Alas, ’tis but a jest! Sorry to disappoint/outrage you! Middle-earth News sends its warmest April Fools greetings to all our friends.
In an exclusive interview with Middle-earth News, Peter Jackson gave a sneak peek of what fans can expect from the upcoming Extended Edition box set of The Hobbit trilogy. According to Jackson, the Extended Edition will add 40 minutes of extra footage and over 10 hours of behind-the-scenes special features.
“We’re all very excited”, says Jackson when talking about the added scenes. “Our desire was to resolve questions that couldn’t be dealt with in the theatrical version.” In addition, Jackson emphasized that fans can look forward to see more of beloved characters that received too little attention in the theatrical version.
A 20-minute long added scene, featuring an encounter between Thorin and Thranduil, draws upon Tolkien’s original: “Tolkien has these great scenes of where Thorin and Thranduil test out each other’s will power so I thought a staring contest would do it justice.” That’s right! Fans can expect 20 minutes of nothing but a royal staring contest between Thorin and Thranduil!
The other 20 minutes will focus on the Battle of the Five Armies where Tolkien fans can watch Legolas prepare for battle. “Orlando and I had the feeling that it would give depth to Legolas’s character by showing how he became the mighty warrior that he is […] There is so much more to Legolas that fans usually don’t get to see but are vital to understand him.” So be prepared to see 20 minutes of Legolas doing gymnastics! Peter Jackson also implied that a special Greenleaf Grace Gymnastics DVD will be released later this year.
Jackson wouldn’t reveal too much about the behind-the-scenes special features, but said that because of overwhelming fan demands, a featurette will give fans a fashion show with an insight into Alfrid’s impeccable and trend-setting fashion.
A release date for the extended edition of The Hobbit trilogy has not been set yet.
