Aidan Turner’s been very busy since filming on The Hobbit wrapped so, if you’re missing seeing him on your screens, here’s where you can catch him next.
Aidan is the star of new drama Poldark which is about to hit American TV screens (it has already aired in the UK and is currently being shown in Australia and New Zealand). Poldark is a drama set in eighteenth century Cornwall and Aidan plays Ross Poldark, a bit of a maverick with a social conscience, who has just returned from the American Revolutionary War. Talking about the show, Aidan says, ‘When we first meet Ross he is in turmoil. He went away to war a young, cocky, confident character with a carefree attitude, who was running away from a lot of things. In America he was faced with death on a daily basis and then when he returns to England he doesn’t really know who he is any more.
‘When he arrives back in Cornwall everything’s changed for him: his father has died, his land is barren, the local tin mines are going through a hard time and laying off workers, leaving the region on its knees, and he’s lost Elizabeth, his childhood sweetheart who he expected to marry on his return.
‘Ross knows he needs to pick himself up and try and find who he is and where he lies in this new world. He’s strong – that’s what I love about him – he’s someone who can get on with things; he doesn’t wallow in self-pity or despair. He sees a situation for what it is and drags himself through it. He admires hard working people and treats people with respect if they earn it – no matter what their position in life. He is an original class warrior!’
Poldark airs in the US on PBS Masterpiece on 21 June, 9 pm. You can find out more about it on Poldarked and @Poldarked.
Earlier in the year Aidan was filming The Secret Scripture in Ireland. The film is based on the book by Sebastian Barry and is about a 100 year old woman reflecting on her life in a mental hospital. It’s directed by Jim Sheridan and stars Theo James, Rooney Mara and Jack Reynor. Aidan plays the character Jack McNulty and says, ‘It’s a really cool job to do and nice to shoot something in Ireland with an Irish accent. It was grand.’
Most recently, Aidan’s been cast in Loving Vincent, a biopic about Vincent Van Gogh. Interestingly, Aidan’s co-star in Poldark, Eleanor Tomlinson, has also been cast according to Screen Daily. The film Loving Vincent is the ‘world’s first animation feature’ where live action is filmed, projected onto canvas, then painted in oils frame by frame in the style of Van Gogh. 60 artists are working on the project. Aidan will join a cast that includes Douglas Booth, Chris O’Dowd, Jerome Flynn, Saoirse Ronan and John Sessions.
We’re looking forward to seeing Aidan in all these productions and are delighted to hear that a second season of Poldark has already announced.
