Warner Bros.have decided not to make a film of the cult comic books ElfQuest, writes Spinoff Online. And they cite competition with The Hobbit as their reason.
ElfQuest was created in 1978 by Wendy and Richard Pini. The original story, which tells of a race of elves struggling to survive, ran for 21 issues.
“After close to four years of suspense – and longer than four years of your much-appreciated interest and support – the word has come down from Warner Bros. And the word is “no.” Their simple explanation is that they don’t want to compete with The Hobbit. This was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for. It is a relief, at last, to know.” said Wendy Pini on her Facebook page
ElfQuest was published by WaRP graphics until the rights were sold to DC Comics in 2003. Their agreement expired in 2007 and Warner Bros. bought the rights to the story in 2008.
And, whilst you have to believe Warner Bros. know what they’re doing, this does seem to be rather a strange decision given the popularity of films like Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. It will certainly disappoint many ElfQuest fans.
