Snow White and the Huntsman appears to be one of those ever increasing additions to what I call the ‘dark fairytale’ movie that’s gained popularity over the last few years.
This is a dark retelling of the classic Snow White story that was originally placed in the Brothers Grimm collection of European fairy tales back in 1812.
So 200 years later we’re still telling the story in original ways. This version appears to be much darker and much grittier. One could argue that perhaps the originals held to that line, but we need a bump now and then to bring us back to the full intensity of this story. Not your Disney fare for sure.
The movie deals with the concept of Snow White being brought to the woods by the Hunstman to be killed, but instead winds up becoming her protector and co-conspirator training her to become a warrior equal to the task of bringing down the evil Queen.
In theaters on June 1, 2012 in the U.S. Check this link to see release date by country.
DVD Release
The Secret World Of Arrietty
Out on DVD on May 22nd, 2012 this movie is based on Mary Norton’s acclaimed children’s book series “The Borrowers.” Arrietty is one of the ‘little people’ who live beneath the floorboards in a suburban home unbeknownst to the owners. A 12 year old human boy, Shawn, discovers little Arrietty and a deep friendship quickly follows. Unfortunately the friendship could place Arrietty, and her family in danger.
From Studio Ghibli, who produced such classics as ‘Spirited Away’, and ‘Ponyo’ it looks like this is another worth watching.
