Fans of William Shakespeare and J.R.R. Tolkien are finding pieces of their favorite stories alive in Kill Shakespeare, a graphic novel from IDW Publishing. This seemingly unconventional pairing was dreamed up by co-authors Conor McCreery and Anthony Del Col after seeing Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, which is when they began to imagine the bard’s characters in a Middle-earth-like setting.
In their story, Hamlet is set up as the Frodo Baggins to Will Shakespeare’s Sauron. Exiled from Denmark and shipwrecked on the shores of Richard III’s England, Hamlet is convinced by Richard and his retinue (Lady Macbeth, Iago, and Tamora) that he is to seek out and destroy Will Shakespeare, wizard and overlord of their world. In his travels, however, Hamlet meets the Prodigals – among them Juliet and Othello – who support Will Shakespeare, which gives Hamlet ample opportunity to exercise his characteristic vacillating nature.
