In an article predicting the end of cable TV, Canadian Business looks at the attempt of movie studios to attract film-goers to the cinema and asks Will The Hobbit be the biggest blockbuster of all time? Well, the case they make for The Hobbit seems pretty strong and not only because it’s been split into two films.
For a start, it has a ready-made audience of Tolkien fans who will give it a great opening. Then, as in many ways it’s a children’s story, it will appeal to families as well as to those who enjoyed LOTR. It should enjoy a long run, with the momentum from opening at Christmas carrying it through to the spring where, with no other blockbusters to compete, it could enjoy an Avatar-style run.
But perhaps most importantly, there’s Warner Bros. According to Canadian Business, no other company is better for promoting this type of film. Warner Bros. have been working on the marketing since 2010 with plans for an unprecedented level of hype this year.
It all bodes well for The Hobbit being the biggest blockbuster of all time.
