Sean Bean, who played Boromir in The Lord of the Rings, was on The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday, February, 25. He was there to promote his new film, Cleanskin, but he talked a lot about his experiences filming in New Zealand.
Ross, who is a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings, asked Bean if watching a clip from The Fellowship of the Ring stirred up any memories. “It was a long time ago, if you think about it. It was about eleven years ago now. When I first got the part, I didn’t realize how it was going to escalate into such a big epic number,” Bean said. “We got to know each other and made some good friends. New Zealand is a great place.”
As an avid fan himself, I’m sure Ross had seen some stories on the extended DVDs and was leading Bean on when he asked about his fear of flying. “I don’t like flying. I’m okay now that I’ve gotten used to it, but at that time, I was a little bit scared,” explained Bean. “That scene that you just saw, that was up on a mountain on some glaciers. And we had to go up in the helicopter with a glass bottom, and that was really scary for me. Whenever I could use any other means to get to the location, I would do.
“I used to get on my costume and the hair and everything, and then I would walk about a half an hour up quite a steep hill. And there was this ski lift, and so I’d sit on that and they’d wire me up.” He laughed, “Dressed as Boromir! And they’d drop me off there and I’d hike another half a mile just because I didn’t want to get on the helicopter.”
