Amazon’s $1bn ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV Show & What is known so far

Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show, expecting to cost $1 billion, will be the most expensive TV show in history.

A few days ago, in an article published by The Hollywood Reporter, it is revealed that Amazon, The Tolkien Estate, publisher Harper Collins, and New Line Cinema came to an agreement over the rights for a Lord of the Rings TV series. Five seasons are planned and filming will have to, according to the terms of the contract, start within the next two years.

Attorney Matt Galsor is quoted saying that: “This is the most complicated deal [he has] ever seen,” and that “it was handled relatively quickly, in a way that brought the parties together in a close relationship. It was tough, but everybody liked each other and felt like a team more as the deal closed.”

Rumours of Peter Jackson’s involvement have been going around the internet with fans wondering if and to what degree he might be part of Amazon’s TV show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peter Jackson’s attorney Peter Nelson was not part of the negotiations, but has “recently helped start a dialogue between Jackson and Amazon.”

Now, only time will tell whether Peter Jackson will be involved in any way with Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show or not. Personally, and this is just my individual opinion, I’m hoping that only fresh new talents will be involved. I love Peter Jackson’s adaptations of Tolkien’s work more than words could ever encompass.

When the Extended Editions for LOTR first came out, all I did in my free time was watch how Peter Jackson and his incredible team of talented people turned LOTR into a film trilogy. All I wanted was to work for Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop. Still, having said that, I’d love to see a new group of creatives interpret and adapt Tolkien’s Middle-earth onto the small screen. I love seeing how differently people adapt this world that means so much to many. Thus, I’m, as Bilbo once said, “quite ready for another adventure”.

As time passes, we’ll hear more about Amazon’s take on LOTR. In the meantime, what are your thoughts on a potential involvement of Peter Jackson? Leave us a comment down below!
