Tolkien Birthday Toast 2019

On January 3, 1892, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, to Arthur and Mabel Tolkien. Known to fans the world over for his novels The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien created the world of Middle-earth that we have come to love and cherish.

To celebrate his 127th, The Tolkien Society invites all Tolkien fans to raise a toast to the Professor today.

Here is how the Tolkien Birthday Toast works. At 9 pm your local time on January 3, do the following:

  1. Stand,
  2. Raise a glass of your choice of drink (it does not need to be alcoholic),
  3. Say “The Professor!”
  4. Take a sip of your drink.

You may then sit back down and enjoy the rest of your drink, perhaps sharing your thoughts on what the Professor’s work means to you with your friends. Be sure to use the hashtag #TolkienBirthdayToast on social media!

The annual Tolkien Birthday Toast is an opportunity for all of us who cherish Middle-earth to join in spirit to honor the man who created the amazing universe of Arda.

How will you honor the Professor on his birthday? Let us know in the comments below.
